Narak Chaturdasi (Kali Chaudas) puja
Narak Chaturdasi is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark half of kartik month, It is usually known as Kali Chaudas. Kali means Dark (evil) and Chaudas - Fourteenth. Kali Chaudas is the day allotted for the worship of Mata kali or Shakti. Individuals who are into tantra, learn their 'mantras' on this day. The rituals of Kali Choudas was originated much before the origin of deepavali as a pujan to kuldevi of the individual families, villagers, as the local goddess with whom the people completed their pooja rituals and offered prasadam in order to protect themselves from evil spirits.
Some people also offer food to their forefathers on this day. House are lit with oil lamps during the evening. This is the 2nd day before Deepavali and is also celebrated as Choti Deepavali or small Deepavali. Lights are lit in smaller numbers and fewer crackers burst. Colored rangoli are drawn in the doorway and courtyard.
